When A Tale of Two Cities begins, Mr. Lorry is headed to Dover in a carriage. Jerry Cruncher, a Tellson's Bank messenger, stops the carriage as he delivers a message to Mr. Lorry, to which Mr. Lorry cryptically responds with "recalled to life." Jerry Cruncher heads back to London and Mr. Lorry continues his carriage ride. Later, Mr. Lorry meets Lucie and reveals to her that her father is dead, and he takes her to find him in France. In France, wine has been spilled on the streets and starving commoners rush to drink the wine from the ground. Ernest Defarge is introduced as the owner of the wine shop, and we see his wife Madame Defarge meeting multiple Jacques. Lucie and Mr. Lorry show up at Defarge's shop so they can find Dr. Manette. They find Dr. Manette in an attic, where he has been making shoes after he went crazy being in prison for 18 years. Mr. Lorry and Lucie take Dr. Manette and leave for England.
